The recent phone hacking scandal reminded me of how driven we can all sometimes be for success; how desperate for headlines and sales the News of the World must have been.
But it also reminded me of how easy it is to stand this side of the line and point and judge at such an extreme example; to comment on how horrific and soulless such people must be.
In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus has to tell us it’s not just the extremes (murder and phone hacking), but also the thoughts that count (anger and success). In other words I may not be hacking phones, I have just hidden my motives to succeed at all costs somewhat better than others have.
Albert Einstein said ‘Try not to become a man of success. Rather, become a man of value.”
When you really take the words of Jesus into the work place it will turn them upside down. In Mark 12 Jesus said the second greatest commandment was to love others as much as ourselves. I guarantee a value like that will get you noticed in a second for all that right reasons.
One way I tried to do this in my last job was by making an extra effort to highlight great work that had gone unnoticed by management - or even worse that they thought I had done but hadn’t.
