Incomparable: Exploring the Character of God

IncomparableIt was always going to be a risk giving your book a title, the pronunciation of which many disagree over. (For the record it’s ɪnˈkɒm.pər.ə.bəl, with the accent on the second syllable.) But enough of phonetics! If the title of the book evokes ambiguity, the content, by comparison is remarkable clear: God is awesome!

And that is the book in a nutshell, an extravagant celebration of the glory and majesty of God, in sixty bite sized chunks.

Andrew Wilson is an elder at Kings Church Eastbourne, has degrees in theology from Cambridge University (MA) and London School of Theology (MTh) and runs two courses in systematic theology for Newfrontiers. In this, his second book, he looks at sixty aspects of God’s character, divided into four sections: The being of God, the names of God, God in three persons and the attributes of God. Each chapter is a couple of pages long and packed with finely honed illustrations to help expound the lofty themes. Incomparable is somewhat of a paradox; a hugely accessible book on the most enormous subject imaginable. It is the perfect companion for devotion and discipleship.

Andrew Wilson‘There is nothing, anywhere, that is more worth reading about and responding to than the character of God,’ Andrew writes. ‘In fact, I am convinced that if your knowledge of God doesn’t grow, then neither will you.’ (p13)

Incomparable feeds both the mind and the heart. It will enable you to know God, to know about Him and to worship Him in increasing measure. But it will also challenge you to live differently as a result.

As you read it you will find yourself refreshed by the knowledge that ‘God sustains’, amazed by the enormous plan and purposes of ‘The God of Israel’ and blown away by ‘The Wisdom of Yahweh.’ I distinctly recall the nauseating feeling that overwhelmed me as I read about ‘The Justice of Yahweh’ and was struck afresh at my own apathy toward injustice in the world. In fact, I would go so far as to claim that you absolutely should not and will not be able to read this book without being provoked to think differently, worship more exuberantly and act with greater compassion and mercy. Focussing on the character of the Almighty God should move you. It should cause you to worship. It should fire you up for mission.

Terry Virgo, in his endorsement writes, ‘I have urged many people over the years to read Packer's Knowing God; now we have a fresh and contemporary book which will fulfil a similar role.’ I wholeheartedly agree, and would urge you, however long you have been a Christian, to read and re-read this valuable book.
